Understanding Foot Pain
Your foot is an intricate structure of bones and joints joined by a web of of more than 120 muscles, ligaments, and nerves. Although your foot is strong enough to carry your body weight, it also acts as a shock absorber and stresses on your foot can make it prone to injury and pain. Your foot pain may the result of a direct injury to your foot but it may also be a referred pain. If a nerve is pinched in your back, that will cause the nerves down your leg and foot to activate. This condition is known as sciatica.
Even relatively mild foot pain can impact your daily activities from walking to driving to sleeping. If you have severe foot pain or swelling, you should seek help from a medical specialist as soon as possible. If your mild foot pain lingers for more than a week and does not respond to cold therapy and rest, it may be a sign of a more severe musculoskeletal injury.
Foot Conditions
- Heel: Plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinitis, bursitis
- Front/ball: Metatarsalgia
- Top: Stress fracture
- Other: Tendinitis
To determine your diagnosis, your physical therapist may perform a movement assessment to watch your walk, squat and balance to access the strength of your leg. Your foot pain may result from ankle stiffness, calf weakness, improper footwear or a change in exercise routine.Acute or overuse injuries can cause inflammation across your foot’s bones, ligaments and tendons leading to foot pain. You may experience burning pain, numbness or tingling.
Why PT?
- Hands-on, manual therapy techniques to mobilize your foot tendon and joints and to reduce swelling, if present
- Therapeutic modalities such as ultrasounds and cold/hot therapy to decrease pain
- Custom strengthening exercise program or your tendon and calf to decrease load on your foot
- Patient education to discuss external factors causing pain such as footwear, running posture or faulty movement
Your PT program will be specific to where you are in the recovery process and the extent of the injury. Progression of movement is quality based. As you demonstrate the ability to do movements pain-free, they will be progressively more challenging. The goal of physical therapy is to get you back to doing your favorite activities, pain-free.
