Golfer’s Elbow Treatment

Golfer’s elbow, aka “thrower’s elbow,” is an overuse injury causing pain on the inside of the elbow. Many of us have probably heard of tennis elbow which indicates pain on the outside of the elbow, but golfer’s elbow is a condition causing pain on the bony bit on the inside of the elbow (medial epicondyle), usually as a result of gripping too hard with the hand. Symptoms of weakness and pain may also be felt in the wrist. When golfer’s elbow is present, it’s important to pinpoint the source and reason for the pain and to seek treatment before the symptoms worsen.

What causes golfer’s elbow?

Golfer’s elbow is caused by repeatedly bending the wrist against resistance, just as a golfer would grip a golf club. It has also been known as “thrower’s elbow” as it may occur from the act of repeated throwing. Other causes of golfer’s elbow stem from working at a computer for too long or by performing repeated tasks through a manual job. Symptoms include pain and inflammation at the attachment point on the inner elbow and weakness and pain felt in the wrist area.

When should I seek treatment for golfer’s elbow?

If you’re experiencing symptoms of golfer’s elbow, the first thing that you should do is rest as this is the only way golfer’s elbow symptoms will heal. It’s a good idea to seek out treatment if the symptoms persist and to ensure that you’re not at risk for repeated injury due to improper mechanics.

How can physical therapy help my golfer’s elbow?

Your physical therapist will work with you to assess your condition and build a plan of care that is unique to your body and individual goals. They’ll recommend a treatment program that helps to improve improper mechanics, factoring in activities in which you frequently participate to ensure that you’re not putting yourself at risk for reinjury. They may incorporate techniques such as:

• Manual therapy to reduce tension in the arm muscles and improve their function in the long-term.
• Strengthening exercises to target any areas of weakness in the muscles surrounding the elbow and arm.
• Movement education to improve form while performing daily activities.

Physical therapists can provide the necessary tools to prevent and/or treat golfer’s elbow, allowing you to return to your favorite activities pain-free and stronger than ever! To learn more about how to prevent golfer’s elbow or to eliminate any current discomfort, book a physical therapy assessment today.
