IT Band Physical Therapy

IT Band Physical Therapy Treatment
Hands-On Care. Long-term, Effective IT Band Pain Relief

I was skeptical about going to physical therapy but so glad I did. My therapist, Whitney has been wonderful in every way and is helping my knee problem. I am so very happy I decided to come to Therapydia.

Even with just a few sessions so far, I can already tell and improvement in my range of motion. The one on one care received at Therapydia is significantly better than other office where the therapist is treating 2-4 patient during same appointment.

Whitney is great! She is hands on and gives me her full attention in my care. She teaches me what exercises to do at home, she prints them out for me as I am a visual person, she explains everything to me and why also. I really do enjoy my PT visits with Whitney. She is caring, kind and knowledgeable. Thank yo

What’s Causing Your IT Band Pain?

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is an overuse injury most common in runners and bicyclists. ITBS causes can be multifactorial including poor mechanics and form, lack of flexibility in the low back, pelvis hips and knees or muscle imbalances in the body. Your IT Band is runs down the outside of your hip down to the knees. When your IT bands rubs against the outside of the knee joint when the knee flexes and extends, inflammation and pain will occur.

Signs & Symptoms

ITBS is commonly mistaken as a knee injury because it occurs on the outside of the knee and swelling occurs around the knee. If you bend your knee and rotate it inwards to 45 degrees, if you feel pain on the outside of your knee, you have ITBS. If ITBS is ignored, inflammation will continue, along with potential scarring, leading to decreased knee range of motion and pain.

With ITBS, you have be experiencing:

    • Pain on the outside of the knee
    • Swelling
    • Tenderness

Why Physical Therapy

During your first visit, your physical therapist will do a full examination of your low back, legs, hips knees and ankles to pinpoint potential causes of IT band pain.

    • Manual therapy: Hands-on techniques to remove restrictions and improve range of motion. Trigger points may be present in glutes and hips.
    • Custom exercises: Strengthening and mobility exercises to develop more efficient movement patterns the IT pain to treat chronic inflammation.
    • Sports-specific movement analysis: Retrain your movement patterns during your sport such as running form to prevent re-injury
