Knee Physical Therapy

I was skeptical about going to physical therapy but so glad I did. My therapist, Whitney has been wonderful in every way and is helping my knee problem. I am so very happy I decided to come to Therapydia.

Due to the onset of age, in addition to a previous knee injury, my ability to exercise safely and without pain had become compromised. Jonathan Burke was recommended to me by several people, independently of one another, which was my first indication that seeing him would be a positive step on my part. Within an incredibly short period of time, the pain that I used to feel minimized to the point of being non-existent, and my range of motion increased dramatically. Moreover, Jonathan truly cares about my progress, often urging me to contact him personally should I experience any problems. He is a professional in every sense of the word.

My experience with John was very professional. The exercises that were done are directed to the point intended. It seems John takes pride in the work he’s doing.I had therapy in 2002 for my right knee, working with John was much better therapy. Working with one person seems to go better then different people throughout the sessions.I have all good remarks for Jonathan Burke in strengthening of my Knee.

What’s Causing Your Knee Pain?

Almost everyone has experienced some type of knee pain, whether it’s caused by a sudden injury to the knee joint or due to repetitive stresses to the structures around the knee. When knee aggravation is present, it can significantly impact your ability to participate in daily activities and sport. It is one of the most common reasons that people seek medical care. Knee pain can result from a myriad of structures around or inside the knee, and the key to its treatment is determining the source and the reason for the pain.

We’ve helped a variety of patients from runners with chronic knee pain to patients who underwent bilateral knee surgery.

Chronic/Acute Pain

Often knee pain can occur from repetitive stress to the structures around the knee and result in vague or “moving” symptoms around the front of the knee. This often results in pain significant enough to avoid aggravating activities or sports all together. Current research shows a strong correlation between knee pain and weakness in the hip musculature, along with the inability to maintain proper alignment of the leg during functional/sport activities. Common Conditions: Patellofemoral Syndrome, Tendonitis, Runner’s Knee, Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Sudden or acute injuries can include sprains, strains, or tears to the ligaments or tendons and these types of injuries usually result from trauma or impact to the knee joint or from quick movements during directional changes, twisting, or pivoting on your foot. Acute injuries typically cause a quick onset of pain accompanied by swelling, and can be diagnosed through clinical testing and imaging. Common Conditions: ACL or MCL Injuries

Why PT?

In any case, whether acute or chronic, incorporating physical therapy into your treatment regimen is essential when considering your long-term recovery. Physical therapy is proven to be successful in relieving pain and improving mobility for non-surgery, pre-surgery, and post-surgery patients. An ideal program will employ guided manual therapy and multimodal exercises to reduce pain and stiffness in the knee joint.

    • Manual therapy: Increase mobility and tissue healing for irritated structures around the knee or structures preventing proper mechanics.
    • Oriented muscle mobilizations called “joint glides” are performed manually on specific muscles and knee extensors to restore the full range of their movements.
    • Custom exercises: Strengthening the quadriceps femoris, the primary muscle that supports the knee.
    • Other modalities: Electrical stimulation may also be applied to reduce knee pain and increase quadriceps muscle strength with controlled contractions.
