Long-term, Effective Elbow Pain Relief
Tennis Elbow Causes
Tennis Elbow (or Lateral and Medial Epicondylitis) is a painful condition that is caused by overuse of your forearm, wrist and hand muscles. Although you can develop tennis elbow from playing tennis, anyone can develop tennis elbow if they repetitively use their wrist, hands, forearm and elbow muscles while on the job or doing the hobbies they love.
Your forearm muscles are joined to the elbow via tendons. These tendons are attached to a bony point on the outside of your elbow, the lateral epicondyle, and tiny tears to the tendon occur when the forearm is overused. Pain starts can start in your elbow and may radiate down your forearm and hand.
Signs & Symptoms
- Pain around your elbow
- Pain radiating down your forearm and wrist
- Pain while holding a water bottle or turning a doorknob
- Weak grip strength
- Weakness in forearm, wrist, hand or elbow
Tennis elbow develops gradually but when acute pain occurs, it is important to take self-care measure immediately. You may be experiencing tennis below if you feel the following:
While tennis elbow may go away naturally, if left untreated, tennis elbow can develop into chronic pain. The first couple of days are critical in treating the source of what’s causing your tennis elbow.
Physical Therapy Treatment
- Manual, hands-on physical therapy techniques to mobilize elbow and wrist joints and massage elbow soreness
- Custom exercise programs to strengthen forearm muscle and decrease irritation of the tendon
- Movement education while doing daily activities to improve form
- Worksite modifications to reduce forearm, wrist and elbow strain
Although pain is felt in the elbow, the core issue of tennis elbow is in the forearm. Physical therapy can help address the cause of your pain and greatly reduce your risk of chronic pain. Every physical therapy treatment is unique to the individual. Below are some of the treatment methods that may be used to treat your tennis elbow.
Jonathan Burke DPT, MTC, CSCS has been very helpful with the treatment I am recieving for my tennis elbow ( tendonitis) as well as a sore / strained hamstring muscle. Looking forward to hopefully recovering to 100% with his and the my treating physician’s help.
I feel that the level of expertise and individual which I receive have enabled me to become more mobile and have less pain. The kindness an encouragement of Jonathan Burke an Heidi Ferry are an added benefit. I have referred several friends to their clinic.
I found the therapist to be outstanding. His personal attention is awesome, and he really listens to your issue. You progress at a comfortable pace. The atmosphere in the office is welcoming and pleasant while you are being treated. I feel they were instrumental in relieving my neck and arm pain. Thanks for all you did for me.
